Renters insurance...I threw stuff away....what's covered?

The apartment is on the 2nd floor and in the apartment above us the water main behind the toilet broke and soaked threw my apartment into the apartment under us. I have renters insurance, but never really knew what was covered. It didn't seem like a lot of stuff got ruined. So I started cleaning, but it has taken me a while because I work full time and go to school, as well as working with my dad for extra cash. So, I threw some things away, like some clothes, shoes, blankets, etc... they were mildewing and got stained from my now wet make up leaking all over them. Rugs mildewed, so I threw them away. Also, I am an artist and all of my art supplies, paper...markers,etc... ruined along with 3 paintings that I had listed for sale. After a week 1/2 of throwing things away and cleaning. I'm starting to take a running total in my head and am realizing there is more financial loss than it appeared. I went to the apartment leasing office to see what they are responsible for ( which is nothing) and was told to contact my renters insurance. So... I did, but now hearing from my agent, that I will get canvas cost for my paintings not what I am selling them for, because i'm not a known artist and my stuff has not been appraised, I won't get any thing for the stuff I threw away because they need to see it. But I can try. And then hearing from other sources... that I would have to buy new stuff submit the receipts and then they will reimburse me. Well, I don't have the money to go buy all of this stuff up front and wait for reimbursement (if any). After this claim my premium will go up, and might have trouble getting coverage again. This sucks so.... bad. Just wondering if it's worth even making a claim, not to mention I have a $1,000- deductible. With my paintings, clothes, blankets, shoes, rugs, make up, toiletry's, and art supplies. I am at about 10,000 worth of loss, but don't have any receipts to prove. I did save a microwave, printer, all of the art supplies painting etc. basically anything that wasn't cloth I saved every thing else I was either to clean or had to throw away. Anyexperiencee with renters insurance claims...any advise helps. Before I meet with theadjusterr I want to be sure that I should even make a claim? Insurance sucks. you pay ever monthin casee Sh*thap pendss, but when it does you still get screwed I think.
