Help getting started with photography?

I really want to do freelance photography. I started by majoring in photography in college but that didn't pan out so well so i have decided to learn on my own but i am learning that it is a bit overwhelming. I need help! where do i start how do i start?!?! i own a canon EOS rebel XS i just need advice on books to buy, lenses, flashes and other equipment to get me started and other helpful hints and tips but keep in mind that i am a poor college student. anyguidancee will help! =)
