Lens or Body? Should I get a EOS550 D or a glass for my EOS450D?

Somebody is wanting to buy my Canon EOS450D from me and I am getting a good deal on it. I am contemplating giving it away and then getting a EOS 550D. A friend insists that I should not waste the additional money ($200) that I am spending on 550D and buy a lens instead. Please help!
